What’s Happening?
Dengue fever remains a serious public health concern in Malaysia. Based on a ten-year study published by the Ministry of Health Malaysia, here are some key points to be aware of:

Rising Dengue Cases: Between January and May 2023, dengue cases increased by nearly 185%, with 25,283 reported cases compared to 13,650 during the same period in 2022.

Increase in Fatalities: There were 24 dengue-related deaths in 2023, a sharp rise from just 7 in 2022.

At-Risk Groups:

  • The elderly, particularly those aged 75 and above, are more vulnerable due to weakened immune systems and existing health conditions.
  • Men tend to have a higher mortality rate than women, potentially due to differences in healthcare-seeking behavior.
  • Central and South Malaysia: Higher death rates due to dense populations and urbanization.
